How do we move from inspiration to action… from an idea to an actual experience? In Kenya – you adapt. This short film introduces Ali Skanda, a master dhow builder from Lamu, Kenya. Ali is a ninth generation of master wood carver, both he and his grandfather have their work featured in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute in the Museum of Natural History.
Lamu islanders face a challenge shared by many coastal and island communities: massive waves of plastic pollution. Ali has built a traditional Swahili dhow made completely of repurposed plastic waste to continue the ancient practice of connection. The FlipFlopi made its maiden voyage in 2019, engaging communities and high-level decision makers about the importance of avoiding single-use plastics. Now Ali and his team prepare to build a larger dhow that can sail the world.
